Skills, Qualifications and Experience
At The Usual Place, young people gain practical skills, recognised qualifications, and real experience.
Learning is personalised and each young person progresses at a pace that works for them.
Programmes are structured to ensure a broad, relevant education and development of real skills and understanding of how to apply knowledge in action.
Programmes and Qualifications
We offer a range of opportunities, including:
- Introductory programmes
- SVQ in Professional Cookery
- SVQ in Hospitality
- Food, Health and Hygiene Course
- Money Matters Course
Young people move into accredited qualification courses when they are ready.
Learning Through Doing
Learning is hands-on.
Young people take part in real work in our cafe, kitchen, and events.
They practise skills in a live environment and learn how to carry them out to a good standard. They also learn the reasons behind what they do by both repeating and following protocols (eg food hygiene, storage, temperature control etc) and discussing these as they do them so this becomes fully understood.
This approach builds experience alongside understanding
Wider Experience
Young people also gain experience through:
- being part of a team
- customer service
- being part of our hospitality and events work
- opportunities through local employer networks
This helps develop a clear understanding of workplace expectations and can open up confidence to explore ambition and opportunities for some young people.
Skills that Develop Over Time
Young people build:
- Industry skills – such as food preparation, service, standards
- Transferable skills – team work, communication, reliability, personal presentation
- Personal skills – confidence, resilience, independence
These are developed gradually, through practice, repetition and mentorship.
Recognising Progress
Every young person who completes a programme receives a certificate. SVQs are Qualifications Scotland accredited qualifications and young people receive credits for each module successfully completed and a nationally recognised qualification on successfully completing all the appropriate modules.
When ready, they can work with our Employer-Ability Mentor to plan and work on their next steps
This includes:
- building a CV including all the experience gained at The Usual Place
- applying for jobs, college or volunteering
- preparing for interviews
Mentorship can continue into employment, supporting the move into work for both the employer and employee until the young person is ready to be independent.
Looking Ahead
Progress is built steadily. Young people leave with:
- practical experience
- recognised qualifications (where appropriate)
- a clear understanding of their strengths
They are better prepared to move into employment, further learning, or other opportunities.
